A startup growth marketer interview works well in four stages: a founder screen, a deep-dive on their real results, a take-home using your own funnel data, and a final round with product or engineering plus references. It tests whether the candidate can measure, run experiments and grow one metric with the budget you have.

## The growth marketer interview plan

Stage 1 · 30 min

Founder screen

Channel fit, budget fit, motivation

With: Founder

Stage 2 · 60 min

Results deep-dive

Real numbers, attribution, how they choose tests

With: Founder or marketing lead

Stage 3 · 60 min

Take-home review

Analysis of your funnel, prioritisation, writing

With: Founder plus one sales or product person

Stage 4 · 45 min plus calls

Final and references

Working with builders, honesty about results

With: Engineer or designer they would work with, 2 to 3 references

Stage 1 · 30 min

Screen

Does their channel match yours?

Stage 2 · 60 min

Results

Screen-share the real dashboard

Stage 3 · 60 min

Take-home

Your funnel, their plan

Stage 4 · 45 min

Builders

Can they brief an engineer?

## Results and measurement

1. Share your screen and show me a dashboard you built. What does each number mean?
2. What is the best result you have driven? What was the baseline, and what else changed at the same time?
3. How did you know which channel a customer really came from?
4. Tell me about a number you reported that turned out to be wrong.
5. How much budget did you manage, and how did you decide where each month's spend went?
6. Which metric would you own here, and why that one?

**Strong answer:** Baselines, context on what else was going on, a clear view of attribution limits, and a mistake owned openly.

**Red flags:** Percentages with no baseline, results that match a big budget or brand launch, or confusion about their own tracking.

## Experiments

1. Walk me through an experiment from idea to decision.
2. Tell me about a test you killed early. How did you know?
3. How do you decide how long a test should run?
4. How many tests did you run last quarter, and what did you learn?
5. Which experiment would you run first here, and what would change your mind?

**Strong answer:** Tests sized before launch, a clear decision rule, and more learning from failures than from wins.

**Red flags:** Calling winners after a few days, or no failed tests.

**Red flag to watch:** A candidate who lists ten channels they have "owned" but can't go deep on any of them. Ask for the detail behind one, such as keyword structure, audience or subject line tests, and see how far the answer goes.

## Channels and craft

1. Which channel do you know best, and what do most people get wrong about it?
2. How would you test a channel we have never used, with a small budget?
3. Rewrite the headline on our homepage. Why that version?
4. How do you work with sales on what counts as a good lead?
5. What would you stop doing in our current marketing?

**Strong answer:** Specific, channel-level knowledge, a cheap way to test a new channel, and a view on lead quality as well as volume.

**Red flags:** Generic best practice, or recommending a large budget before any test.

## Startup fit

1. What would you do in your first week if our tracking was broken?
2. How do you get engineering time for a growth test when the roadmap is full?
3. What would you need to see by month three to know this was the right move?
4. What kind of help do you need from a founder, and what would get in your way?
5. What have you built yourself, with no designer or developer?
6. Tell me about a result you are proud of that took more than six months.

**Strong answer:** Willingness to fix measurement first, practical ways to get tests built, and at least one thing they shipped alone.

**Red flags:** Needing a full team to start, or only short-term wins.

## Work sample: your funnel, their plan

Share an anonymised snapshot of your funnel for the last six months: traffic or leads by source, conversion at each stage and spend by channel. Ask for a one-page plan with the three experiments they would run first, how they would measure each, and what they would stop doing. Cap it at 3 hours.

Look for questions about data quality before conclusions, a focus on the biggest drop in the funnel, and tests small enough to run on your budget. Polish matters much less than reasoning.

## Scoring rubric

| Outcome | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Growth in the owned metric | No clear results | Results without baselines | Clear results with baselines | Repeated results in a similar setting |
| Measurement you can trust | Relies on others' data | Reads reports | Built tracking | Built tracking and spotted errors in it |
| Experiment rate and learning | No structured tests | Tests without decision rules | Sized tests, clear decisions | High cadence and a written learning log |
| A second channel | Only one channel | Surface knowledge of others | Tested a new channel | Proved a new channel from zero |
| Efficient spend | No view of cost | Tracks spend only | Tracks cost per result | Cut cost per result at scale |

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good take-home for a growth marketer?

A one-page plan built on your own anonymised funnel data, capped at 3 hours. It shows how the candidate reads data and prioritises, which a generic case study doesn't.

### How do I check a growth marketer's results?

Ask them to screen-share a real dashboard in interview, ask for baselines, and ask references what else was changing at the time.

### What should the growth marketer job description include?

One owned metric, channels in scope, budget and engineering help. Use our [growth marketer job description template](https://funded.club/blog/growth-marketer-job-description) and read our guide on [hiring a growth marketer](https://funded.club/blog/hire-growth-marketer-startup).
