Updated September 2026

A strong startup growth marketer job description names the one metric the hire owns, the channels in scope and the budget and engineering help they will have. It should also say which channels already work. Growth marketers are specialists more often than job adverts admit, and those details let the right specialist recognise the job.

Copy-and-paste growth marketer job description

Growth Marketer at [Company]

About [Company]
[Company] helps [customer] to [outcome]. We are [number] people, backed by [investors]. Most of our customers find us through [channel that works today], and we sell through [self-serve sign-up / a sales team / both].

The role
You'll own growth in [sign-ups / qualified pipeline / activated users] from [channels in scope, e.g. paid search, SEO and lifecycle email]. You'll have a monthly budget of [amount], [number] days a week of design and engineering help, and you'll report to [founder / Head of Marketing]. Brand, PR and events sit with [name / nobody yet].

What you'll achieve in your first 6 months

  • Set up tracking so we can see where every [sign-up / opportunity] came from, and trust the numbers.
  • Grow [metric] from [baseline] to [target] per month.
  • Run at least [number] experiments, with a written log of what worked, what didn't and why.
  • Find and prove one new channel that can scale beyond [current channel].

What you'll bring

  • You've grown a [B2B / B2C] product through [channel] and can show us the numbers.
  • Hands-on with analytics: you can [write basic SQL / build reports in [tool]] without help.
  • You design experiments before running them, and kill the ones that don't work.
  • Clear writing for ads, landing pages and email.
  • Experience with a monthly budget similar to ours.

Nice to have

  • Experience in [product-led / sales-led] growth.
  • Basic HTML or no-code landing page skills.

What we offer

  • Base salary [£/$/€ X to Y].
  • Equity: [range].
  • [Remote / hybrid], at a [Seed / Series A / Series B] company.
The everything JD

"Own brand, content, SEO, paid, social, lifecycle, events and analytics. Build our growth engine from zero."

The focused JD

"Grow [qualified pipeline] from [paid search and SEO], with [budget] a month and [2] days of engineering a week. Brand sits elsewhere."

The everything JD reads as a team of five with one salary. Strong candidates spot it and apply elsewhere, and the people who do apply are often generalists who have never gone deep on the channel you need.

Four mistakes founders make in a growth marketer job description

  • No budget stated. A marketer who grew a product with a large paid budget may struggle with a small one, and the reverse. Give the range.
  • No engineering or design help. Most growth tests need landing pages, product changes or tracking. If nobody can build them, say so, and hire someone who can build them alone.
  • Hiring off a big-brand logo. Growth at a well-known company often comes from the brand. Ask what they did that would have worked without it.
  • No single metric. "Drive growth" can mean traffic, sign-ups, pipeline or revenue. Pick one.

Frequently asked questions

What does a growth marketer do at a startup?

They own one growth metric, such as sign-ups or qualified pipeline, and improve it through measured experiments across a few channels. At Seed they often set up tracking too.

Should I hire a generalist or a specialist growth marketer?

Hire a specialist in the channel most likely to work for you, with enough breadth to test one or two others. Our free job description builder helps you narrow the scope.

How do I interview a growth marketer?

Ask for real numbers, a failed experiment and a take-home using your own funnel data. See our growth marketer interview questions for 22 questions and a scoring rubric.
