Many founders do the opposite and hire to "figure out" a channel with no signal yet, which is much harder to judge. Test candidates with a short, paid task built on your own data. Growth marketer is a broad title. It can mean a paid acquisition specialist, a content and SEO lead, a lifecycle marketer or a generalist who runs experiments across all of them. The useful way to think about it is as a T shape: a wide bar of skills every growth marketer needs, and a deep stem in one channel. The hiring decision is mostly about which stem you need. ## The T-shaped growth marketer The wide bar covers analytics and attribution, experiment design, copywriting, landing pages, lifecycle email and positioning. Someone deep in paid social knows creative fatigue, audience overlap and how to read results with small budgets. Someone deep in SEO and content knows how long results take and how to pick topics that convert. These are different people, and job descriptions that ask for both at an expert level tend to attract neither. ## Choose the stem from your own data Pull the share of signups or qualified leads by source for the last quarter. The channel that already brings in a meaningful share, with little deliberate effort behind it, is usually the one to hire depth for. Here is an illustrative example. A B2B startup finds that 46% of signups come from organic search and content, 28% from founder posts and referrals, and the rest from partnerships, a few paid social tests and events. They can double down on a channel that is already working, and you can judge their progress against a real baseline within a quarter. Paid social can wait for a second hire, or become an experiment this person runs once the main channel is compounding. ## A paid interview task that shows real skill Portfolios in growth marketing are hard to verify, because results depend on the product, the budget and the team around the candidate. A short task on your own data is more reliable.
