A startup can hire a senior engineer in about five weeks from kick-off to accepted offer when the process is tight. Funded.club's searches average 33 days from kick-off to hire, and Supernova averaged 27 days across 22 hires. Searches that run much longer usually lose the time between stages, waiting for feedback, diaries and decisions, rather than in the search itself.

When a senior engineering search drags, founders tend to blame the market. Sometimes that is fair. More often, the work itself took about the same time it always does, and the extra weeks piled up in the handovers nobody owned.

## Where the weeks go

To show the effect, we split an illustrative senior engineer search into the work (briefing, sourcing, screening, interviews, final stage, offer) and the waiting in between. Both versions below contain exactly the same 28 days of work.

In the slow version, the scorecard waits four days for sign-off, CVs wait six days for feedback, interviews wait eight days for diaries to line up, the team takes five days to decide and a counter-offer eats another five. None of those gaps feels serious on its own. Together they add 23 days, and they are the days when strong candidates accept other offers.

Nobody in the tight version worked harder. Each handover simply had an owner and a deadline of one working day.

## The stages of a senior engineer hire

Most startup searches for a senior engineer go through the same six steps. Knowing what each one is for makes it easier to spot where yours is stuck.

- **Brief.** Agree what the engineer must deliver in the first year, the two or three skills that are required, the salary range and who interviews.
- **Sourcing.** Find and approach engineers who are not actively looking. This is where a dedicated recruiter saves you the most time.
- **Screening and interviews.** A recruiter screen, then your technical conversation and a practical exercise or code review.
- **Final stage.** Meet the founders and the team, discuss the product and how decisions are made.
- **Offer.** Salary, equity, start date and the reasons to join, ideally presented on a call rather than by email.
- **Notice period.** Not part of time to hire, but it decides the start date. It varies by country and contract, so ask about it at the first screen.

## How to take time out of each stage

The fixes are mostly small habits. The table shows where time usually leaks and what to do about it.

If you only change one thing, block the interview windows in advance. Diary clashes are often the biggest gap in a slow process, and they are the easiest to remove.

## What slows senior searches in particular

Senior engineers are rarely short of options, so every pause is a chance for another company to move first. They also tend to ask harder questions about the technical direction, the team and how much say they will have. Founders who prepare honest answers before the first interview spend less time recovering from awkward final stages.

The other common delay is a brief that changes halfway through. If the first three candidates make you realise you need someone more hands-on, say so straight away and reset the brief. Carrying on with the old description while privately wanting something else can add weeks.
