*Updated September 2026*

A strong startup senior backend engineer job description describes the hardest technical problem the hire will own, the services and data they'll be responsible for in production, and what on-call looks like. It defines "senior" as someone who can take a vague problem to production without close supervision, lists at most six must-haves, and gives salary and equity ranges.

Stack lists all look the same to candidates. The line that gets a strong backend engineer to reply is usually the one describing the problem: the data you handle, where the system strains today, and what they would get to design.

## Copy-and-paste senior backend engineer job description

**About \[Company\]**

\[Company\] builds \[product\] for \[customer\]. We're \[number\] people, \[number\] in engineering, funded by \[investors\]. Our backend handles \[what the system does, e.g. payment events from \[number\] merchants\].

**The role**

You'll own \[named services or area, e.g. our billing and events pipeline\] from design through to running it in production. Our hardest problem right now is \[e.g. processing events reliably as volume grows, keeping data consistent across services\]. You'll report to \[name, title\] and work closely with \[product / frontend engineers\].

**What you'll do in your first 6 months**

- Take ownership of \[service\] and ship your first change to production in week one or two.
- Design and deliver \[named project, e.g. a new pricing engine\] by \[month\].
- Cut \[a specific pain, e.g. failed jobs, slow queries, manual fixes\] so the team spends less time firefighting.
- Join the on-call rota, which is \[frequency\], and improve the runbooks as you go.
- Raise the bar through code reviews and short design docs the rest of the team can follow.

**What you'll bring**

- You've designed, shipped and run backend services that real customers depend on.
- Strong experience in \[language\], or deep experience in a similar language and the willingness to switch.
- Solid data modelling with \[database, e.g. Postgres\], including migrations on live data.
- You've debugged production issues under pressure and fixed the underlying cause.
- You can work from a rough brief, ask the right questions and decide what to build first.

**Nice to have**

- Experience with \[queue / streaming tool, e.g. Kafka, SQS\].
- \[Domain experience, e.g. payments, healthcare data, logistics\].
- You've been an early engineer at a startup.

**What we offer**

- Salary: \[£/$/€ X to Y\].
- Equity: \[X% to Y%\], \[vesting schedule\].
- \[Remote / hybrid\], \[time zone overlap needed\].
- Stage: \[Seed / Series A / Series B\]. \[Benefits\].

If you'd rather generate a first draft, try our [free job description builder](https://funded.club/job-description-builder). For interviews, use our [senior backend engineer interview questions](https://funded.club/blog/senior-backend-engineer-interview-questions), which follow the scorecard below.

Define senior by what the hire can do alone

What founders often mean by "senior"

"Seven or more years of experience."

"Knows our exact stack."

"Has worked at a well-known tech company."

What senior means at a startup

Takes a vague problem to production without a detailed spec.

Picks up a new language or tool in weeks.

Has run what they built, including at 3am.

## How the role changes by stage

| | Seed | Series A | Series B |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Scope** | Most of the backend | A few services or one domain | One domain in depth, with other teams depending on it |
| **Main work** | Building fast, first data model | Reworking what was rushed, adding reliability | Performance, scale, platform work |
| **On-call** | Everyone, informally | A proper rota starts | Rota with runbooks and alerts |
| **Who they work with** | Founders directly | Product manager and frontend engineers | Several teams and a platform group |

At Seed, this person may effectively be a founding engineer. If so, read our guide on [hiring a founding engineer](https://funded.club/blog/hire-founding-engineer) too, because the equity and expectations differ.

## Scorecard: how you'll judge success

| Outcome | What good looks like at 12 months | How you'll test it in interviews |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Service ownership | \[Service\] runs with few incidents and they know its weak spots | Deep dive on a service they ran in production |
| Data and API design | Data model and APIs the team builds on without workarounds | Design session on a real feature from your roadmap |
| Reliability | Alerts that mean something, runbooks, fewer repeat incidents | Ask them to walk through an outage they led |
| Delivery | Ships steadily in small pieces, including one larger project | Take-home debrief: what they built first and what they left out |
| Raising the bar | Reviews and design docs others learn from | Ask for a design doc they wrote, or a review they are proud of |

Design

Short design doc

Trade-offs written down before code

Build

Small pull requests

Tests where the risk is

Ship

Behind a flag

Rolled out and measured

Run

On-call

Alerts and runbooks they wrote

Improve

Postmortems

Root causes fixed and shared

This is what "owns a service end to end" should mean in your JD. If your team can't offer all five, say which parts sit elsewhere.

## 30-60-90 day plan

| Days | Focus | By the end they should have |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 to 30 | Ship small changes; read incident history; join on-call as a shadow | Code in production and a list of the service's weak spots |
| 31 to 60 | Take full ownership of \[service\]; write the design doc for the first project | On-call without a shadow and an agreed design |
| 61 to 90 | Deliver the first phase of the project; fix one recurring issue | A shipped milestone and one fewer source of repeat incidents |

## Mistakes founders make in senior backend job descriptions

**Demanding an exact language match.** Good backend engineers move between languages more easily than founders expect. A hard requirement on one language shrinks your pool for little gain.

**Hiding on-call.** Candidates will ask, and a vague answer late in the process loses trust. Put frequency and expectations in the JD.

**Listing tools instead of the problem.** Ten technologies tell a candidate nothing about the work. One sentence about your hardest problem tells them almost everything.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a senior backend engineer job description include?

The problem they will own, the services and data involved, on-call expectations, up to six must-haves, and ranges for salary and equity. Outcomes for the first six months matter more than a list of duties.

### Should I require experience in our programming language?

Usually not. Ask for strong experience in your language or a close one. Data modelling and production experience are harder to learn on the job.

### What is the difference between a senior and a mid-level backend engineer at a startup?

A senior engineer can take an unclear problem, design a solution and run it in production with little guidance. A mid-level engineer usually needs the problem broken down first.
