Vancouver shares Pacific time with San Francisco and Seattle, so the real work is deciding who employs the person, what currency you pay in, which benefits you add and how equity works for someone taxed in Canada, all before the job ad goes out. With one hire planned, an employer of record is the quickest way to employ someone properly in Canada, and they can set up a Canadian entity later if the team grows. Paying the person as a contractor would be simpler on paper, but a full-time role run like a job is likely to be treated as employment, so they rule it out. Next comes pay. The founders decide to pay in Canadian dollars and agree the band before the search opens, so the recruiter can share it on the first call. Benefits follow. Provincial health cover is in place already, and candidates expect an employer to add extended health and dental cover on top, which the employer of record can provide. Finally, the founders ask a Canadian tax adviser how their option plan applies to someone taxed in Canada, so they can explain it clearly at the offer stage. Once those four answers are written down, the job ad almost writes itself.
