The right Toptal alternative depends on what you are buying. For freelance project help, the alternatives are other freelance talent networks or freelancers you find yourself. For a permanent employee, look at search-led recruiters such as Recruiting from Scratch, Hunt Club, Paraform, Dover or Funded.club, or at a jobs marketplace such as Wellfound, where you screen applicants yourself.

## Name what you are buying first

Toptal is a talent network that connects companies with screened freelance specialists, including software developers, designers, finance experts, and product and project managers. Lists of alternatives mix networks, recruiters and jobs boards that do different jobs.

Sort your need into one of four groups before comparing names, because each group leaves different work with you.

GROUP 1

Project help

**You buy** a specialist's time for a defined piece of work.

**You keep** management of the work and the handover.

GROUP 2

A contract-to-permanent route

**You buy** a trial period with an agreed path to employment.

**You keep** the conversion decision.

GROUP 3

A full-time hire someone else searches for

**You buy** sourcing and screening by a recruiter.

**You keep** the interviews and the final choice.

GROUP 4

A jobs board you screen yourself

**You buy** reach to applicants.

**You keep** every step from screening to offer.

## Groups 1 and 2: project help, or a trial with a path to a job

### Project help

If what you need is a specialist for a defined piece of work, Toptal may already be the right answer. It suits short, scoped work, needing someone working within days, and staying at your current headcount. The alternatives here are other freelance talent networks, or a freelancer you find through your own network and screen yourself.

### A contract-to-permanent route

Some needs start as a project and may become a job, such as a first data analyst when you are not sure there is a full-time role yet. Agree before day one when you will decide on conversion, what the permanent offer would look like, and what the conversion terms are. Contractor rules vary by country, so take legal advice before the conversion date.

Whether a provider supports this route varies, so check each provider's own site for current pricing, terms and the engagement types they offer.

ASK ANY PROVIDER BEFORE YOU SIGN

Will this person be on my payroll, or engaged through you?

Who screens candidates, and what do I see before I interview?

If the work becomes a permanent role, what are the terms?

When do I pay, and what happens if it does not work out?

## Groups 3 and 4: a full-time hire, searched for you or by you

For a person who will join your payroll, the main alternatives are recruiting models. The main difference between them is who does the searching and how the fee is set.

| Model | Example | Suits you when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Contingency recruiter** | Independent recruiters and firms | You want a fee charged as a percentage of salary, typically 20 to 25% |
| **Tech recruiting firm** | Recruiting from Scratch | You want a firm that focuses on tech hiring for startups |
| **Network and referral-led firm** | Hunt Club | A leadership hire where warm introductions matter |
| **Recruiter marketplace** | Paraform | You want several independent recruiters working one role |
| **ATS with on-demand recruiters** | Dover | You want tracking software and recruiting help in one place |
| **Fixed-fee recruiting partner** | Funded.club | You want one dedicated recruiter and a fee agreed upfront |
| **Startup jobs marketplace** | Wellfound | You have time to post the role and screen applicants yourself |

A jobs marketplace is the do-it-yourself option. You get reach and keep the screening, which works when someone on the team has protected time for it. Our comparison of [Wellfound and a recruiter](https://funded.club/blog/wellfound-vs-recruiter) covers that trade-off, and our [Dover alternatives guide](https://funded.club/blog/dover-alternatives-startup-recruiting) looks more closely at the software-led models.

## Worked example: four needs, four groups

Take a fictional 11-person seed-stage climate software startup with four needs for the next six months. It sorted each before contacting anyone.

1. **A design system for an app relaunch.** Six weeks of defined work went to a freelance talent network (group 1).
2. **A first data analyst.** The founders were unsure there was a full-time role, so they agreed a three-month contract with a conversion review in week ten (group 2).
3. **A first head of sales.** A permanent leadership role, so they used a recruiter-led search (group 3).
4. **A customer support specialist.** The operations lead had time to screen, so they posted on a startup jobs marketplace (group 4).

The head of sales was the biggest recruiting cost. At an illustrative salary of $145,000 (swap in your own), a contingency fee at 20 to 25% would be $29,000 to $36,250. Under Funded.club's fixed-fee bands, a hire up to $150,000 is $11,500.

## Where Funded.club fits

We sit in group 3. We recruit permanent hires who join your own team, across engineering, product, sales, marketing, operations, customer success and leadership. We do not supply freelancers or contractors, so for group 1 work a freelance network is the better fit. If you are still deciding between a freelancer and an employee, read [Toptal or a recruiter for a startup hire](https://funded.club/blog/toptal-vs-recruiter).

Founded in 2019, we have helped 500+ startups from Seed to Series D across North America, Europe and APAC. Each search has one dedicated recruiter who handles sourcing, headhunting, screening and support through offer. First screened candidates arrive within 7 days, the average from kick-off to hire is 33 days, and our fill rate is 100%.

The fee is fixed per hire and agreed upfront, from $4,900 to $21,900 and averaging 6 to 9% of salary. You pay part as an advance when the search starts and the balance when your candidate accepts the offer. First-time customers can ask to defer the advance until they see their first candidates, and if there is no shortlist of at least 3 qualified candidates within 30 days, you can claim the advance back in full. The bands are on our [pricing page](https://funded.club/pricing).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the closest alternative to Toptal for a startup?

For freelance project work, the closest alternatives are other freelance talent networks or a freelancer found through your own network. If you need a permanent employee, a recruiter or a startup jobs marketplace is the better comparison.

### Can a recruiter find a freelancer for my startup?

Some recruiters work on contract roles and some do not, so ask before you brief them. Funded.club recruits permanent hires only.

### Should a startup use a jobs board instead of a recruiter?

A jobs board suits roles that attract plenty of suitable applicants, when someone on your team has time to screen them. For senior or hard-to-find roles, a recruiter who approaches people who are not applying usually suits better.
