Hire a head of marketing once you know who your buyer is and need a steady flow of pipeline that does not depend on founder networks. Choose someone whose proven channels match your sales motion, whether that is demand generation, product-led growth or brand and content, and assess them with a short plan built on your real numbers and positioning.
Many startups hire marketing leadership too early, before positioning is settled, and the new hire spends months rewriting the website. Others hire too late, when sales is starved of leads. A useful test: can you explain in one sentence who you sell to and why they buy? If yes, and pipeline is now the constraint on growth, it is time.
Decide whether you need a hands-on builder or a leader of an existing team. At most early startups the first head of marketing will run campaigns personally for a while, with freelancers or one or two hires around them. Titles such as VP or CMO can come later, once there is a team to lead.
"Marketing" covers very different skill sets. Match the candidate to your go-to-market motion:
Across all of these, look for evidence of results at a similar stage and budget. Big-budget experience at a large company rarely translates directly to a startup with a small spend.
The best candidates are usually employed and busy, so a clear pitch about stage, budget and the problem they will own matters.
Be cautious with candidates who describe only tactics, or only strategy. You need both at this stage.
Marketing leaders want to know the budget they will control, how success will be measured and whether founders will let go of messaging. Agree two or three measurable goals before the offer, and put the budget range in writing.

Most early startups are better served by a hands-on head of marketing who builds and runs programmes personally. A CMO title usually suits a later stage, when there is a team, a larger budget and a board-level brand agenda.
Agree this before the offer. Typical goals are clear positioning and messaging, one or two working acquisition channels, and reporting that sales and founders trust.
Usually the CEO at an early startup, because positioning and brand sit close to the founders. Whatever you choose, make sure marketing and sales share targets.
It depends on the profile and market. Funded.club averages 33 days from kick-off to hire, with first screened candidates within 7 days.
