A strong startup product designer job description says which design decisions move from the founder to the new hire, how the week splits between research, interface work and a design system, and which outcomes the designer owns in six months. It asks for a portfolio with reasoning attached and shows salary and equity up front.
Most first designers inherit a product the founder has been designing by default, usually a Figma file with three abandoned colour schemes. Before writing the JD, list every design call you make today and mark which ones you're handing over. Candidates read that list as the real job.
We'll follow one illustrative company through this page: an eight-person Seed startup building dispatch software for regional freight operators, whose CEO has drawn every screen so far.

Working from rough notes, the free job description builder drafts one for you. Our product designer interview questions test each scorecard row below.
How a product designer job description changes by stage
| Seed | Series A | Series B | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | Everything, often the marketing site too | Core flows; brand moves to a specialist | One product area, in more depth |
| Research | Joins founder calls, then runs sessions | Owns a monthly research rhythm | Works alongside a dedicated researcher |
| Design system | A first set of components | Owns and documents the system | Contributes to a system someone else runs |
| Title to consider | Founding product designer | Senior product designer | Product designer, often under a head of design |
A Seed JD written like the Series B column attracts specialists expecting a researcher and design system. Our freight startup cut "work within our design system" from its draft, as there wasn't one.
Scorecard: how you'll judge success
Agree the scorecard before the advert goes live, so a beautiful portfolio can't win on looks alone.
| Outcome | What good looks like at 12 months | How you'll test it in interviews |
|---|---|---|
| Customer insight | Monthly research the founder does not organise, which has changed [number] roadmap decisions | Ask how a research finding changed what shipped, and who pushed back |
| Core flow quality | [Flow] redesigned and measurably better on [metric] | Deep dive on one shipped flow: what they cut and why |
| Design system | Engineers build new screens from components without asking | Ask which ten components they would build first |
| Engineering partnership | Handoffs cover empty states and errors; few rebuilds | An engineer reviews one of their real handoffs with them |
| Founder handover | The handover list is theirs, and the founder has stopped redrawing screens | Ask about a founder design they disagreed with and how it ended |
30-60-90 day plan
| Days | Focus | By the end they should have |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Learn: join customer calls, read support tickets, audit every screen | A ranked list of usability problems and a signed-off handover list |
| 31 to 60 | Fix: redesign the top-ranked flow with engineers | The flow in build and a quarterly research plan |
| 61 to 90 | Systematise: ship it, start the component library | The flow live with a before and after measure, first components in code |
Mistakes founders make in product designer job descriptions
Asking for a unicorn. Expert research, UX, UI, brand, motion and front-end code describes a team. Pick the two skills your stage needs most.
Hiding that the founder has been the designer. The hire finds out in week one anyway. Saying it, with what you're handing over, draws designers who want ownership.
Leaving research out. A JD that only talks about screens hires someone who waits for a spec. The freight startup swapped its opening line, "pixel-perfect UI", for weekly calls with dispatchers.

Frequently asked questions
Should a product designer job description ask for a portfolio?
Yes, but ask for two or three case studies showing the problem, the options considered and what the candidate decided. Finished screens alone say little about judgement.
What is the difference between a product designer and a UX designer job description?
A product designer job description covers everything from research to shipped interface. UX and UI roles split that path, which suits teams with several designers.
When should a startup hire its first product designer?
When founder design time slows the roadmap, or customers struggle with flows nobody can fix. For a brand or marketing site alone, a freelancer often fits better.
