A first CTO is a hire you can recruit for, with a salary, a defined role and a structured search. Decide which one you need first, because the route to each is different. The best co-founder matches usually come through someone who knows both of you. - **Be visible in technical communities.** GitHub, Stack Overflow, LinkedIn and founder communities are where technical people talk about problems. Join the discussions, share your vision and show your passion for the problem, not just the idea. - **Go where builders meet.** Industry events, hackathons, university programmes and coding bootcamps are good places to meet people who like building from scratch. - **Build something together first.** A short project, a prototype or a weekend hackathon tells you more about working together than any number of coffees. - **Agree the hard things early.** Roles, decision-making, equity split, vesting and what happens if one of you leaves. Put it in writing with legal advice. ## How to hire your first CTO Once you can pay a salary, treat it as a proper search: - **Write a compelling role description.** Lead with the mission, the problem and the product stage. Be clear about responsibilities, what success looks like in the first year and how the role will grow. - **Decide what stage of CTO you need.** A hands-on builder who writes code daily is different from a leader who scales a team of fifty.
